Nike's Believe in the Run Contest - Vote for Janeth!

ChiADead runner, Janeth Salazar-Ohst, and her friend, Wendy, made a video for Nike's Believe in the Run contest. This well-made and inspirational video shows us what it means to be runner among all the other life roles -- woman, daughter, sister, wife, mother. If you like it, too, please vote! You can vote every day until April 28. As of today, April 23, the video is ranked 9th!

ChiADeads Technical T-Shirt Pre-Orders

We're in the process of designing a ChiADeads T-Shirt to be worn by our ChiADeads Relay team during the MC200 relay race. The shirt is still being designed by Paul Clement and getting approvals/ideas/confirmations from other ChiADeads on the Yahoo group list.

We're not sure about the price yet. I believe it depends on the number we order; however, I think it will be somewhere between $20-$30. When we learn more, I'll post the price to this entry.

Once we come up with a final design, we'll post it to this blog entry (Here is a link to some possible designs - feel free to leave a comment). In the meantime, we're taking pre-orders at this time so we know how many we expect to order, so feel free to leave comments on this post or on the Yahoo list and provide us with the following information:

1. Name
2. Shirt Size
3. Style of Shirt (long sleeve, short sleeve, muscle shirt, etc - we're getting feelers out there as to the kinds of shirts we should be ordering)
4. Quantity

February 23rd, 2008 ChiADead Group Run

This month's ChiADead Group Run will be on the March Madness Half Marathon course in Cary, IL. Please read below for more information regarding this run.

Where will we meet? In the high school parking lot (click for map).

What route will we run?
Well, that depends on what group you will be running with. From what I understand this month's group run may consist of more than we usually have. Some of Janeth's running crowd will be meeting out there, as well as, some ChiA friends. Each group may or may not be running a different route. As for me, I plan on running the course as mapped out below. If you need suggestions as to a shortened route, please let me know.

What should you bring?
Bring your own hydration to accommodate the distance you are running that day.

Please bring a camera if you can. I'd like to capture some photos at each of these group runs and post them for everyone who weren't able to make it. If you do take photos, please upload them to a public photo gallery and send a link through the Yahoo group. We'll then get that link posted here. We didn't have any pictures from last month's run, so none were posted.

What time should we meet?
Let's meet at 8:30 AM; however, I recommend getting there a little early to start your stretching. The group should head out and start running by no later than 8:40 leaving a bit of time for those late arrivers to join in for the fun.
We have some folks driving up from Naperville, which is about a 1 hour commute.

How far are we running?
Like other months, each of us have different running schedules and goals, so our distances might vary. For those of us running together, I think we might want to group ourselves based on the distances we plan on running and/or the pace we intend to run.
As for me, I intend on running somewhere between a 10 and 11 minute pace for the 13.1 miles.

For those of you running on your own because you might want to run faster or much, much slower try to get there a bit early so we know who you are before you ditch us ;-).

Breakfast Options:
*Egg Harbor Cafe - Barrington, IL (Just south of Rte 14 on Rte 59) - My vote
Richard Walkers Pancake House, Crystal Lake
http://www.richardwalkers.com/crystal_lake/index.php

Einstein Bagels (next to Egg Harbor Cafe)

Panera Bread, Fox River Grove (on Rte 14 about 10 minutes from High School)

Who is participating in this group run (Post Comments)?
Please post a comment to this blog entry if you're expecting to participate at the group run this month. Also, please post your expected mileage, pace requirements, trail you'd like to run, also, if you are able to bring a camera.

Those attending the group run are categorized below. I just categorized people where I think they may want to run. This, of course, is by no means an assignment:

Fast Group (sub 3:10 group):
Janeth, Kevin Madden and handful of others in training group
Mid Group (8:30 - 9:30 mpm group):
Joe, Dan, Greg

Slower Group:
Brian, Kelly, Paul, Sean, Debbie, Ian

Other Information
There are heated bathrooms at the parking lot and bathrooms at the other parking lot on the trail.

For breakfast Janeth mentioned that there is a local pancake house. I'm not sure if this something that everyone wants, but I think we can talk about it at the run.

August 25th, 2007 ChiADead Group Run

For this month's ChiADeads Group Run we will meet at the Leroy Oakes Forest Preserve in St. Charles, IL.

What trail system will we run at?
Great Western Trail and possibly the Leroy Oakes Forest Preserve grassland trails.

Which trail will we run? View the trail map
The primary trail on which the run will take place is the Great Western Trail heading northwest from mile marker zero.

There are also quite a few grassland paths in the forest preserve, both on the North and South side of Dean St.

As there are several options here, and everyone has different needs and preferences, we can probably use the same method we used for the Poplar Creek run – run together for a bit on one of the grassland paths and then head to the Great Western Trail at the zero mile marker (or thereabouts). We can discuss this in the ChiADeads group so feel free to post feedback to the group run post for this date.

Where will we meet?

In the parking lot on the South side of Dean St. at Shelter #2.

Kelly created an excellent Google Map which provides the locations of our group run meeting place and post run breakfast location, with directions to and from each location. You can also use the map to generate directions to the meeting place (from home) by clicking on the Group Run Meeting Place – Pavilion link.

What should you bring?
Bring your own hydration to accommodate the distance you are running that day. There is a water source at the meeting place and it seems to be passable for drinking.

As usual please bring a camera if you can. If you do take photos, please upload them to a public photo gallery and send a link through the Yahoo group. We'll then get that link posted here.

What time should we meet?
Let's meet at 7:30 AM; however, I recommend getting there a little early to start your stretching. The group should head out and start running by 7:40 leaving a bit of time for those late arrivers to join in for the fun.

How far are we running?
Once again, we can group ourselves based upon our required distances and/or pace. Keep in mind though that part of the social aspect of the group run is to, at a minimum, run together for a short period of time. If necessary, we can then split up individually or in to smaller groups in order for each of us to run our required distances.

Other Information
There is a restroom facility right near Shelter #2 (where we will be meeting). It is sufficiently large enough to change clothes in if you should so desire.

Post Run Breakfast
We will get together at the Colonial Café in St. Charles, at the Southeast corner of Tyler Rd. and Route 64. For point of reference, there is a Cadillac dealership on the Southwest corner of Tyler. See the blue line on the
Google Map for the route from the forest preserve.

If you should have any questions, please feel free to post them here or in the ChiADeads group. We will update the blog with any relevant information.

Have Fun and Happy Running!

Congratulations to Gayle Wagner for completing the Grand Island Marathon

Congratulations to fellow ChiADead Gayle Wagner for completing the Grand Island Marathon in Munising, Michigan this past weekend on Saturday, July 28, 2007.

More important than the time (see results) she finished in (5:09:25) was her enjoyment on the island with all the beauty it had to bring and the friendly people she met at the race.

Illinois Prairie Path - Aurora Branch

Illinois Prairie Path Trail Report
by Paul Clement

For those of you who have run this stretch of the Illinois Prairie Path this may not be very interesting, but I thought I would post some information for those who might be interested in the Aurora Branch. Below is a summary of my experience:

Pros:

  • First mile or so and last miles are in the shade
  • It's almost all crushed limestone
  • The trail is clean - kudos to the volunteers who keep it that way
  • Relatively easy to follow since for the most part it's a straight line that cuts diagonally through Naperville and Aurora
  • Relatively flat trail
  • Not very busy, few distractions so you can focus on your running

Cons:

  • No shade in the middle four miles
  • Trail isn't very wide, one lane each way until about half way into Aurora
  • You're running under rather hefty power lines during the middle four miles
  • Missing mile markers – I only saw 5 and 12
  • There are a couple of busy streets you have to cross
  • No (official) restrooms – plan accordingly

Comments:

I hopped on to the IPP Aurora Branch at the Ferry Rd. bridge which is just a couple hundred yards west of Route 59. I parked at and ran from my sister's place, which is almost a mile west of the bridge off of Ferry. Ferry is the first major road parallel to and north of I-88.

You need to be aware of cyclists coming up from behind you for the first several miles. The IPP Aurora Branch intersects with the Batavia Spur just before the I-88 underpass. You do have to cross a number of streets along the Aurora Branch but most are not particularly busy or have little or no traffic. The concrete pedestrian bridge across N. Eola Rd is about a hundred yards or so and you have to run a bit uphill and then back downhill to cross. Farnsworth is one the roads you have to cross cautiously.

It's a little different than running on a forest preserve trail since there are streets, businesses and residential homes in the area. I've never had to run under major power-lines before but it's a little creepy at first because of the noise. On the run back I pretty much blocked out the sound.

Not sure where the Aurora Branch officially ends but I suspect its either East Indian Trail or Route 25 in Aurora. I didn't see a sign so I ran two tenths of a mile across Route 25 where I think I might have hooked up with the Fox River Trail heading south towards Oswego. The Fox River was on my right hand side as I stopped to refuel and subsequently turn around to make my way back. Total trip one way, including the nine tenths of a mile from my sister's house, was a little over seven miles.

If there's any other information I can provide, please let me know by providing a comment to this posting. I'll probably run the Batavia Spur sometime in the near future.

Runners journeying through Illinois - Lend them your support!!!

There are some amazing people (John & Karen Wallace) running through the our Chicagoland area on their journey down from Marquette, Michigan all to Biloxi, Mississippi at the Gulf of Mexico in efforts to bring awareness to their Alzheimer's cause (read below). Read more and visit their website in how you can help.

Also, if you want to run with them, here is how (view more info on website):

We would enjoy running with all those that wish to join us. We are going to be running at a 12-15 minute pace. slow for most but we have 1400 miles to run. We want to enjoy the sights, the people, and experience. Please let us know as much in advance as possible so we can be sure our area dates have not changed.

Here is a map of where they will be in Illinois (coming up as early as July 30, 2007) http://tinyurl.com/yru5k7

Read their son John's email post to the Ultra List just this morning.

They aren't famous. They aren't fast. But they are family.

My folks are clipping along at about 15.5 miles per day and are into their 3rd week already with 16 days in the rear view mirror. Illinois is a week away and I couldn't be prouder at their perseverance and positive attitude as the weather has been either rainy or muggy for many of the days on the road.

The run has already garnered local newspaper coverage as well as a regional television spot along with archives online. This has lead to greater exposure for their Alzheimer's Disease cause which many people are connected to through parents, grandparents, and other usually elderly people.

If anyone lives along or knows someone who lives along the remaining route, they'd love to camp in your front yard, borrow some wi-fi internet, do a load of laundry, charge up their electronics, or just chit-chat about running and achieving your adventurous dreams.

For those not living along the remaining route (WI, IL, KY, TN, MS), please check out their website at: http://www.togetherwerun.com/. Read the blog, sign the guestbook or forum, view the photographs, order a shirt, and follow along the rest of the summer into late September.

I'll try to post an update every couple of weeks!

Brian "Lead Foot" Gaines finishes the Leadville Marathon

Congratulations to fellow ChiADead Brian Gaines for his courageous finish of the Leadville Marathon in Leadville, Colorado on Saturday, July 7, 2007. Brian suffered a foot injury two weeks prior to the race and took time off until a decision-making hike on part of the course the day before the race. He felt pain during the race itself but managed to finish in a respectable 7:17, well within his goal of finishing within 8 hours. Brian didn't find out until after his return that his injury was indeed a metatarsal stress fracture. He now gets to wear an orthopedic boot and inherited the nicknames "Bootsie" (he is trying to ban the use of this one) and "Lead Foot" as a result. ;-)

Read the stellar account of his adventure -- don't forgot to watch the video clip that he took of the course the day before. Great job, Brian!

July 28, 2007 ChiADead Group Run

This month's ChiADead Group Run will be at Deer Grove Forest Preserve in Palatine, IL. Please read below for more information regarding this run.

What trail system will we run at? Deer Grove Forest Preserve, Palatine, IL

Which trail will we run? View the trail map
I'll leave this one up to the group this week; however, visit the map linked above. My recommendation would be to run the Yellow Trail Loop then connect up with the Black trail, then the Brown Trail, loop it around and come back. This might be close to 9 miles.

Where will we meet? In the parking lot nearest the pavilion (at the location where the XTerra 8K race was held if you were there); however, please see the "finger pointer" on the map below encircled with a cyan-colored circle for a visual of where to meet up.

If you’re coming from the city, you should take I-90 to the Rte 53 exit towards the North, then take the Rand Road exit and take it left (West). When you get to Dundee Road, go left (West) to Quentin Road, then make a right (North). The make a left turn into the forest preserve. Follow the road and look for the first parking lot on the left-hand side of the street (see above meeting spot). Please make driving adjustments accordingly from where you're coming. You may want to mapquest or google map your location to the intersection of Quentin Road and Dundee Road, Palatine, IL

Let's meet at 7:30 AM; however, I recommend getting there a little early to start your stretching. The group should head out and start running by 7:40 leaving a bit of time for those late arrivers to join in for the fun.

How far are we running?
Like last month, each of us have different running schedules and goals, so our distances might vary. For those of us running together, I think we might want to group ourselves based on the distances we plan on running and/or the pace we intend to run.

For those of you running on your own because you might want to run faster or much, much slower try to get there a bit early so we know who you are before you ditch us ;-).

Other Information
There are Port-a-Johns right off the parking lot where you will be meeting as there are at many different places; just see the trail map for those locations. This trail has lots of shade, but bring some bug spray.

Hopefully Ian Stevens will be joining the group after his crewing adventure at Badwater and will provide a full report of his experiences there.

For breakfast I believe there is still a Denny's at the corner of Rand Rd and Dundee Rd.

Who is participating in this group run (Post Comments)?
Please post a comment to this blog entry if you're expecting to participate at the group run this month. Also, please post your expected mileage, pace requirements, trail you'd like to run, also, if you are able to bring a camera.

Janeth Salazar-Ohst gets 1st place at Chicago Bastille Day 5K

CONGRATULATIONS to Janeth Salazar-Ohst on getting 1st place female overall at the Bastille Day 5K this evening. Although the course was a tad short according to everyone in our work group (~2.91 miles according to Paul Clement’s Garmin 305 GPS watch), her time was an impressive 16:55 (I think). We watched her receive her medal and $250 gift card to Niketown. Way to go Janeth!!!

Janeth receiving her 1st place award:

Janeth with hubby Andy:

Other impressive finishing times included Paul Clement, who PR’ed with a 23:30 and Kelly Roe, who PR’ed with a 24:10. Yours truly (me) walked in last place with a 49:10.

Chicago Distance Classic gives out technical shirts

I received an email today telling me that LaSalle Bank is going to give out to all participants a technical t-shirt for the Chicago Distance Classic. This is the first time in the 31 years the race has been occurring. The email reads as:
For the first time in it's 31-year history, every participant in The LaSalle Bank Chicago Distance Classic will receive a FREE technical race shirt. "The partnership with Reebok has been fantastic" says Runner's World columnist and race organizer John "the Penguin" Bingham. "They have stepped up in a big way by providing every participant with a high-quality technical shirt. These shirts would cost nearly as much as the race registration fee if you bought one at retail. It's a fantastic deal for the participants."

June 30, 2007 ChiADead Group Run

This month's ChiADead Group Run will be at Poplar Creek in Hoffman Estates. Please read below for more information regarding this run.

What trail system will we run at? Poplar Creek, Hoffman Estates/Streamwood

Which trail will we run? View the trail map
There are 2 trail systems worth running checking out here. The "Red", which is the 8.9 mile paved loop and the "Brown", a 2.6 mile dbl & single track trail loop (see Brian Gaines' description of it).

Course photos by Dave Johnsen

Where will we meet? In the parking lot at the 0/8.9 Mile marker, which is on the west side of Route 59 in between Golf Road and Shoe Factory Road (about 2 minutes South of I-90). Once you enter the parking lot area look for the first pavilion on the left and park there.

What should you bring?
Bring your own hydration to accommodate the distance you are running that day. I don’t think a water drop is necessary, unless you can't carry enough with you for a 9 mile loop. In any case, the half-way point from the start today is the Barrington Rd or Higgins/Shoe Factory parking lot. Those two parking lots are relatively close to each other.

If you can bring a camera, that would be great. I'd like to capture some photos at each of these group runs and post them for everyone who weren't able to make it. If you do take photos, please upload them to a public photo gallery and send a link through the Yahoo group. We'll then get that link posted here.

What time should we meet?
Let's meet at 7:30 AM; however, I recommend getting there a little early to start your stretching. The group should head out and start running by 7:40 leaving a bit of time for those late arrivers to join in for the fun.

How far are we running?
Like last month, each of us have different running schedules and goals, so our distances might vary. For those of us running together, I think we might want to group ourselves based on the distances we plan on running and/or the pace we intend to run.

For those of you running on your own because you might want to run faster or much, much slower try to get there a bit early so we know who you are before you ditch us ;-).

Who can I contact if I get lost?
You won't; as long as you get to Route 59, go North until you get to Golf Road, then keep a lookout for the Forest Preserve on the left. If you're coming from the North, you'll cross over I-90, then Shoe Factory Rd. Once you do this, then starting looking for the Forest Preserve on your right.

Howerver, if you’re coming from the city, you should I-90 to the Rte 59 exit on the right; once you go through the toll exit at Rte 59, you make a left hand turn at the stop light (going southbound), you will then cross over I-90, then Shoe Factory Road (2nd stoplight), once you do this, the turn into the forest preserve will be on your right less than 1 minute away. Look for the sign posted on the group run blog entry.

Other Information
There are Port-a-Johns right off the trail at many of the parking lots surrounding Poplar Creek. The following parking lots have these bathrooms: Bode/Golf, Bode, Higgins/Shoe Factory, Shoe Factory/Rte 59.

There are only a few spots with shade on the trail (near Mile 1 marker, stretch along Barrington Rd - Mile 4, near Higgins/Shoe Factory Rd parking lot - Mile 5/6, so dress for the sun; don't forget your sunblock.

I like to run counter-clockwise on this course. It seems to be the common direction of runners; cyclists tend to go the other direction.

If you guys would like to go to I-HOP after the run, it's just a few miles away at the corner of Higgins and S. Barrington Rd. I created a map from the parking lot to I-HOP. There is also another restaurant called "Nest Cafe" in Bartlett that is on Rte 59 on the west side of the road near Stearns Road. This is about 10 minutes South on Rte 59 from the parking lot. They've got the best pancakes ever. Big portions and reasonable prices.

Who is participating in this group run (Post Comments)?
Please post a comment to this blog entry if you're expecting to participate at the group run this month. Also, please post your expected mileage, pace requirements, trail you'd like to run, also, if you are able to bring a camera.
