Congratulations to fellow ChiADead runners (Paul Clement, Kelly Roe, Rebecca Sturgeon, and Ian Stevens) for finishing the XTERRA XTREME Trail Run 12K race earlier today. They all lucked out as there were torrential thunderstorms underway this morning up until about 20 minutes before the start of the race.
Congratulations to fellow ChiADead Gayle Wagner for completing the Grand Island Marathon in Munising, Michigan this past weekend on Saturday, July 28, 2007.
Congratulations on a job well done to all Badwater finishers especially those from Illinois. I'm happy to mention that all Illinois runners finished the race under the 60 hour cutoff. Way to go!!!

by Paul Clement
For those of you who have run this stretch of the Illinois Prairie Path this may not be very interesting, but I thought I would post some information for those who might be interested in the Aurora Branch. Below is a summary of my experience:
Pros:
Cons:
Comments:
I hopped on to the IPP Aurora Branch at the Ferry Rd. bridge which is just a couple hundred yards west of Route 59. I parked at and ran from my sister's place, which is almost a mile west of the bridge off of Ferry. Ferry is the first major road parallel to and north of I-88.
You need to be aware of cyclists coming up from behind you for the first several miles. The IPP Aurora Branch intersects with the Batavia Spur just before the I-88 underpass. You do have to cross a number of streets along the Aurora Branch but most are not particularly busy or have little or no traffic. The concrete pedestrian bridge across N. Eola Rd is about a hundred yards or so and you have to run a bit uphill and then back downhill to cross. Farnsworth is one the roads you have to cross cautiously.
It's a little different than running on a forest preserve trail since there are streets, businesses and residential homes in the area. I've never had to run under major power-lines before but it's a little creepy at first because of the noise. On the run back I pretty much blocked out the sound.
Not sure where the Aurora Branch officially ends but I suspect its either East Indian Trail or Route 25 in Aurora. I didn't see a sign so I ran two tenths of a mile across Route 25 where I think I might have hooked up with the Fox River Trail heading south towards Oswego. The Fox River was on my right hand side as I stopped to refuel and subsequently turn around to make my way back. Total trip one way, including the nine tenths of a mile from my sister's house, was a little over seven miles.
If there's any other information I can provide, please let me know by providing a comment to this posting. I'll probably run the Batavia Spur sometime in the near future.
We would enjoy running with all those that wish to join us. We are going to be running at a 12-15 minute pace. slow for most but we have 1400 miles to run. We want to enjoy the sights, the people, and experience. Please let us know as much in advance as possible so we can be sure our area dates have not changed.
They aren't famous. They aren't fast. But they are family.
My folks are clipping along at about 15.5 miles per day and are into their 3rd week already with 16 days in the rear view mirror. Illinois is a week away and I couldn't be prouder at their perseverance and positive attitude as the weather has been either rainy or muggy for many of the days on the road.
The run has already garnered local newspaper coverage as well as a regional television spot along with archives online. This has lead to greater exposure for their Alzheimer's Disease cause which many people are connected to through parents, grandparents, and other usually elderly people.
If anyone lives along or knows someone who lives along the remaining route, they'd love to camp in your front yard, borrow some wi-fi internet, do a load of laundry, charge up their electronics, or just chit-chat about running and achieving your adventurous dreams. For those not living along the remaining route (WI, IL, KY, TN, MS), please check out their website at: http://www.togetherwerun.com/. Read the blog, sign the guestbook or forum, view the photographs, order a shirt, and follow along the rest of the summer into late September.
I'll try to post an update every couple of weeks!

Congratulations to fellow ChiADead Brian Gaines for his courageous finish of the Leadville Marathon in Leadville, Colorado on Saturday, July 7, 2007. Brian suffered a foot injury two weeks prior to the race and took time off until a decision-making hike on part of the course the day before the race. He felt pain during the race itself but managed to finish in a respectable 7:17, well within his goal of finishing within 8 hours. Brian didn't find out until after his return that his injury was indeed a metatarsal stress fracture. He now gets to wear an orthopedic boot and inherited the nicknames "Bootsie" (he is trying to ban the use of this one) and "Lead Foot" as a result. ;-)
Where will we meet? In the parking lot nearest the pavilion (at the location where the XTerra 8K race was held if you were there); however, please see the "finger pointer" on the map below encircled with a cyan-colored circle for a visual of where to meet up.
For the first time in it's 31-year history, every participant in The LaSalle Bank Chicago Distance Classic will receive a FREE technical race shirt. "The partnership with Reebok has been fantastic" says Runner's World columnist and race organizer John "the Penguin" Bingham. "They have stepped up in a big way by providing every participant with a high-quality technical shirt. These shirts would cost nearly as much as the race registration fee if you bought one at retail. It's a fantastic deal for the participants."
Congratulations to the following Illinois Ultramarathoners that successfully completed the ever-so-popular 34th Annual Western States 100 Mile Endurance Run in Squaw Valley, CA on June 23-24, 2007. We're all proud of you.

What trail system will we run at? Poplar Creek, Hoffman Estates/Streamwood
